Pi Chi Omega proudly recognized Dr. Gary Bennett with the esteemed Award of Achievement during the annual Membership Meeting at PestWorld. Nominated by Dr. Kathy Heinsohn, the award celebrates Dr. Bennett’s extraordinary contributions to the entomology profession, the pest management industry, and generations of students and colleagues who have benefited from his leadership and mentorship.

In Dr. Heinsohn’s absence, the honor was presented by Kim Kelly Tunis, one of Dr. Bennett’s former students. Kim reflected on the remarkable breadth of Dr. Bennett’s career, noting that his professional journey shaped not only her own path but also the careers of countless others across the industry.

She recounted his early years as a professor of entomology at Louisiana State University, followed by his doctoral studies at Purdue University—a place where he would ultimately leave a lasting legacy. Kim emphasized how Dr. Bennett followed in the footsteps of several legendary figures in the field, including J.J. Osmun and Austin Frishman, contributing to the long line of educators and innovators who helped define modern urban entomology.

Kim reminded the audience that everyone in the room had likely been touched by something Gary has done—whether through his teaching, his mentorship, his writing, or his leadership. Dr. Bennett has played a pivotal role in advancing not only individual careers but also the professionalism and scientific foundation of the entire pest control industry.

One of Dr. Bennett’s most enduring achievements is the tremendous growth and elevation of the Purdue Pest Management Conference (PPMC). Under his guidance, the conference evolved into a nationally respected institution known for its exceptional educational programming, influential speakers, and unparalleled networking opportunities. States across the country have long sought to emulate the success of the PPMC, striving to mirror its rigorous training, rich content, and sense of community.

As the PPMC celebrates its 90th presentation this year, Dr. Bennett’s influence remains unmistakable—from the thoughtful agenda development to the dynamic social events that strengthen the bonds of the profession. His handprint continues to guide the conference he helped shape into a benchmark for excellence.

Kim closed her remarks by expressing that Dr. Bennett has been a teacher, a mentor, and a friend to so many, and that the industry owes him a deep appreciation for his lifetime of service. She also extended heartfelt thanks to his family—Milta, Nicki, and Chris—for sharing him so generously with his extended pest control family over the years.
